A fraction shows a part of a whole. 🍕 Picture one pizza cut into equal slices. The BOTTOM number (the denominator) tells how many equal slices the whole is cut into. The TOP number (the numerator) tells how many of those slices you have. So 1/4 means the pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you have 1 slice. And 3/4 means you have 3 of those 4 slices — almost the whole pizza. More on top = more of the pizza: 3/4 is more than 1/4. Tricky bit: when the TOP is 1, a SMALLER bottom means a BIGGER piece. 1/2 is bigger than 1/4, because halves are bigger than quarters. Two fractions can be equal: 2/4 fills the same space as 1/2 — both are half the pizza.
