What Is a Fraction? ๐
A fraction shows a part of a whole. ๐ Picture one pizza cut into equal slices. The BOTTOM number (the denominator) tells how many equal slices the whole is cut into. The TOP number (the numerator) tells how many of those slices you have. So 14 means the pizza is cut into 4 equal slices and you take 1 slice:
Take 3 of those 4 slices and you have 34 โ almost the whole pizza:
More on top = more pizza. Side by side, 34 is clearly more shaded than 14:
Different fractions can cover the SAME amount. Look โ 12 and 24 shade the same pizza, so they are equal:
Tricky bit: when the TOP is 1, a SMALLER bottom means a BIGGER piece. Compare โ 12 is bigger than 14, because halves are bigger than quarters:
