For the past 11 years I have researched the latest findings in Neuroscience in an effort to understand why this dysfunctional behaviour exists, why it is sustained and to find ways to combat this ever growing problem. To this research I have added my own considerable personal experience with bullies both in school settings and in the workplace.
Bullying is one of the most difficult behavioural problems for teachers and administrators to recognize, manage and change and as you know all too well it is one of the most hurtful experiences children can personally endure whether it be in school, the community center or the workplace. Often the emotional scars last a life time.
Furthermore, contrary to popular misconceptions and some of the current writing on the topic, my research reveals that most bullies have serious psychological problems including feelings of inferiority and inadequacy, they experience relationship issues, possess feelings of elitism, sometimes bordering on narcissism, possess limited empathy and have a deep need to obsess upon and control others. For many bullying is addictive. Nevertheless, there are a small number of children who bully out of sadness and frustration. Fortunately, remediation can be easy for these children if the issues are addressed promptly.
This anti bullying program covers the Five Levels of training each designed to assist schools and school districts in developing an “Anti Bullying Knowledge and Action Infrastructure” programme within the school or school system. #2 COUNTERACTING ADULT BULLIES IN YOUR SCHOOL SYSTEM

My work on the topic of bullying initially consisted of research, writing and delivering workshops on students who were bullying others and those being bullied in the K-12 system. However, seldom would a workshop go by without someone raising the topic of adult bullies within their school or school system. Since I want to increase the productivity of your school or schools for unless you have the most perfect school system in the universe, you have teachers who are bullying students and other teachers, you have principals and vice/assistant principals bullying students, parents, teachers and other staff and you may, very well, have personnel within the Board/Regional Office who are abusing their position and bullying a full range of others for their own social, emotional and personal gain.
Again your school system is underperforming because of this dysfunctional behaviour. Students are the net losers, followed by the dedicated, talented and highly adaptive teachers who are impeded in their desire to achieve excellence and finally you become, by default, a loser, because your system is not producing the results expected by students, parents and taxpayers.

#4 Successfully teaching children when Poverty is BIG in their lives-
Addressing their Six Roadblocks to Success
Learning can be a challenge to most children: But: Children living in poverty usually face even more challenges than children from most other socio-economic groups. In addition to a whole host of material and social shortages and their effects on childhood development, poverty can also a state of mind, which includes persistent failure, restricted future, acceptance of the status quo and a discounting of possibilities that education provides. In other words poverty can lead to living a life without hope. Therefore, if we apply the knowledge we are gaining from brain research including new understandings on how emotions impact learning we can have success.

#5 Seven Critical Strategies for Maximizing High School Completion Rates:
Meeting student needs by applying neuro science and other related research
Many economic and social factors are converging on today’s high schools. The economic downturn has prompted governments and school districts to increase their focus on effectiveness and efficiencies AND economic conditions have changed the workplace to such a degree that there will likely be fewer jobs for high school drop outs or non completers. On the social side large numbers of new immigrants are striving to find their place and people living in poverty are even less likely to break the poverty cycle without a high school diploma and the ability to proceed further.
In addition, adolescents, as usual are trying to “find themselves” cognitively, emotionally and socially. This is a challenge as most Grade 10 students are still 10 – 15 years from full cognitive development. In this workshop there are three over riding themes for success.
1. Building a strong knowledge base,
2. Establishing a solid skill set to apply this acquired knowledge
3. Becoming emotionally committed to achieving success.
The Two Day program covers the educational knowledge and practices needed to achieve the stated objectives PLUS a range of techniques to overcome the resistance to change which is needed for innovation. Change has to occur both within curriculum and instructional system as well in the mindset of the students.

# 6 Instinctive Judgement- The Ultimate in Brain Development
The critical dimension for Successful people-Successful organizations
A quote by Malcolm Gladwell from his book “blink”, page 272. “What set Michael Jordon (substitute the name of any other honestly successful person here) apart from his peers was his attitude, motivation (and applicable knowledge). And those qualities can’t be measured with formal tests and statistics. They can only be measured by exercising judgement, by an expert with long years of experience, drawing on that big data base in his/her unconscious and concluding, yes, they have it or no, they don’t. The very best and most successful basketball teams – like the best and most successful organizations of any kind (including school systems or classrooms) are the ones that understand how to combine rational analysis with instinctive judgement.”
For Gladwell “instinctive judgement” is the power of thinking without thinking. It is the uncanny ability to see things that need to be addressed, to make assessments and to arrive at positive workable solutions “on the fly”, as it were. It is a special intelligence, developed over time that combines one’s ability to be emotionally and cognitively “in the zone”. This state of thinking results from the experience of hundreds of incidents, the application of training and a background of rationale analysis. All successful teachers have instinctive judgement in spades. Outstanding administrators have instinctive judgement in abundance.
